Nigerian music stars are once again making waves globally as major nominees at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.

Leading the pack are Burna Boy and Asake, each earning two nominations this year. Burna Boy has scored nods for “Higher” in the Video for Good category and “TaTaTa” (featuring Travis Scott) in Best Afrobeats.

Asake’s nominations both fall under Best Afrobeats, for his collaborations “Active” (with Travis Scott) and “Get It Right” (with Tems)

Several other Nigerian and African acts have also received recognition:

Rema for “Baby (Is It a Crime)”

Wizkid for “Piece of My Heart” (featuring Brent Faiyaz)

Tems, part of Asake’s “Get It Right” nomination

Moliy for her remix “Shake It to the Max (Fly)” with Silent Addy, Skillibeng & Shenseea

Tyla for “Push 2 Start”

Ayra Starr nominated for MTV PUSH Performance of the Year for “Last Heartbreak Song”

On the global stage, Lady Gaga dominates the nominations with a staggering 12 nods, including top categories like Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, and Song of the Year. She’s closely followed by Bruno Mars with 11 nominations and Kendrick Lamar with 10.

This year’s VMAs introduce two fresh categories: Best Pop Artist and Best Country, reflecting the show’s expanding genre reach.

The awards ceremony will take place on September 7, 2025, at the UBS Arena in New York, and will be televised live on CBS, MTV, and streamed on Paramount+
