Fire Erupts in High-Rise Building on Broad Street, Lagos; Occupants Trapped
A major fire broke out on Tuesday at Afriland Towers, a six-storey building located on Broad Street, Marina, Lagos Island, trapping several occupants and causing panic in the busy commercial district.
The fire began in the building’s basement inverter room. As smoke spread to upper floors, people inside were seen trying to flee, some were rescued using ladders, while others, in distress, attempted to jump from windows. Bystanders gathered in large numbers in front of the structure, alarmed by the sight.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded, receiving the distress call around 13:38 hours. Fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations were dispatched immediately.
Officials confirmed that the evacuation process is underway, and firefighting teams are actively battling the blaze. They reported the earlier panic has been reduced since the arrival of first responders. At the time of reporting, no casualties had been officially confirmed.
