Rita Edochie Condemns Women Who Willingly Become Second Wives

Nollywood veteran actress Rita Edochie has sharply criticised women who agree to become second wives, calling the decision selfish and harmful to families.

Speaking via a video shared on her Instagram page, Edochie shared a sermon clip from a cleric that decried polygamous relationships. The cleric accused second wives of greed, jealousy, and using witchcraft in their pursuit of a married man.

In full agreement, Edochie argued that becoming a second wife is not an honourable role. She said it involves building one’s happiness at the expense of another woman’s pain, and that it is driven by “covetousness” rather than love or destiny.

She grilled some of the ways second wives are framed in societal discourse, saying:

“If you’re a second wife, you are nothing but a witch. You are not innocent, you are not special, you are just greedy. You have chosen to feed on another woman’s tears, to build your happiness on someone else’s pain. Do not call it love; it is wickedness. Do not call it destiny; it is covetousness.”

Edochie further warned of spiritual and emotional consequences, suggesting that those who cause pain will eventually face their own troubles. She said there is “no glory in being a second wife, only shame, curses, and the unending reminder that you could never be first.”
