Veteran Bollywood actor‑comedian Govardhan Asrani, popularly known simply as “Asrani,” passed away on 20 October 2025 at the age of 84. His final rites were held in an intimate, private ceremony, in line with the actor’s own wishes.

Final Moments and Health Struggle

According to his manager, Asrani had been admitted to a Mumbai hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties. Doctors found an accumulation of fluid in his lungs. He passed away around 3:00 p.m. on the day of his death.

Within hours of his passing, his family, respecting his wish for privacy, carried out the funeral and cremation at the Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai. No public announcement was made ahead of the ceremony.

A Legacy of Laughter

Asrani’s career spanned over five decades during which he appeared in more than 300 films and became a beloved fixture in Hindi cinema.

He is perhaps best remembered for his role as the eccentric jailer in the classic film Sholay (1975), where his line “Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailor hain” became a cultural touchstone.

His versatility saw him move effortlessly between comic, supporting and character‑roles, working with major stars across eras.

A Respectful Goodbye

The choice to keep his funeral private reflects Asrani’s desire to depart without fanfare, a quiet exit befitting a man who brought joy to millions but sought personal peace at the end. His manager affirmed:

“We did not inform anyone about his demise as it was his wish that we should keep it a private thing.”
