Veteran singer 2Baba (Innocent Idibia) has celebrated a major milestone, 25 years in the music business, with a moving “Open Letter of Gratitude” in which he reflects on his journey and honours those who helped shape his career.

Reflection and gratitude

In his message, titled “Open Letter of Gratitude, 2Baba @ 25 Years in the Industry”, the artist said:

“As I stand on the threshold of 25 years in this incredible journey called music, my heart is full of gratitude, memories, lessons, and love. This celebration is not mine alone. It belongs to everyone who played a role in shaping the story of Innocent Idibia, 2Baba.”

He notes that his success was not achieved alone but was the result of support, belief and collaboration from many individuals throughout his career.

Acknowledging mentors, peers and fans

2Baba singled out key figures from his early days, including:

Nelson Brown, credited for recognising the potential in his group Plantashun Boiz at a time when they “barely had a microphone, a space when all we had was a dream.”

Baba Keke (Kenny Ogungbe) and D1 (Dayo Adeneye) — described as mentors who gave him his first professional deal, “a defining moment that changed not just my life, but the entire entertainment landscape.”

Eddie Lawani, thanked for providing a platform for Plantashun Boiz when opportunities were scarce.

DJ Jimmy Jatt, lauded for loyalty and support from his earliest days in the industry.

His former group-mates Blackface and Faze, referred to as brothers and part of the foundation of what became his solo success.

In addressing everyone from producers, DJs, media houses, fans and fellow artists, 2Baba emphasised that “without the people who believed, corrected, and supported me, my story would have been incomplete.”

Milestone celebration & legacy

The milestone coincides with his 50th birthday, another key marker in his life and career.

According to his letter and media reports, he plans a grand anniversary event on 14 November 2025 at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Abuja in Abuja, which will bring together industry figures, fans and associates.

From starting in the late 1990s with Plantashun Boiz to becoming one of Africa’s most influential music icons, 2Baba’s career features landmark hits like “African Queen,” “If Love Is a Crime” and “For Instance.”

In his own words, the milestone is more than a personal celebration, it’s a collective tribute to everyone who has walked the journey with him:

“This journey has been more than music; it has been a story of faith, love, resilience, and unity.”
