SDP Urges U.S. to Support Nigerian Military Instead of Invading
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has responded to recent threats of U.S. military intervention in Nigeria by calling for support of the Nigerian military rather than foreign invasion.
The party addressed remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump in which he cited the killing of Christians in Nigeria as grounds for potential U.S. military action. In their statement, the SDP stressed Nigeria’s sovereignty and recommended that the U.S. provide logistical, financial and intelligence support, but refrain from deploying troops or carrying out unilateral operations on Nigerian soil.
The party emphasised that a strategy of partnership and capacity-building with the Nigerian armed forces offers a more sustainable path to security. According to the SDP, external military incursions risk undermining national autonomy, inflaming tensions and complicating the region’s security architecture.
Security analysts observe that while Nigeria continues to battle a range of insurgent and armed-group threats, violence affects both Christian and Muslim communities. They caution the framing of these incidents purely in religious terms may oversimplify the conflict dynamics and hamper effective responses.
By urging foreign partners to reinforce Nigerian institutions and respect its territorial integrity, the SDP’s call reflects broad concerns about foreign military involvement in internal affairs. The party’s statement came as diplomacy and security cooperation remain focal points in Nigeria’s engagement with major global powers.
