Xabi Alonso, manager of Real Madrid, has lavished praise on his goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after the Belgian delivered a standout performance during his side’s 1-0 loss at Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield.

Despite the defeat, a header by Alexis Mac Allister in the 61st minute proved decisive, Courtois made an impressive eight saves and significantly limited Liverpool’s attacking opportunities.

“He made great saves today … for me, we have the best [goalkeeper], we are lucky we have him,” Alonso said in his post-match comments to Amazon Prime.

Real Madrid were restricted to just two shots on target and registered an expected goals (xG) of only 0.45, their lowest in over a year.

Reflecting on the match, Alonso added:

“It was really tight, tight game… we competed well, but we lacked a bit of a threat in the final third.”

He also addressed the return of former Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander‑Arnold to Anfield with Real Madrid, saying it was a “new experience” for the player and acknowledging the challen
