Veteran Kannywood Actor Malam Nata’ala Passes Away After Prolonged Illness
Renowned Northern Nigerian actor Yakubu Mato, popularly known by his stage name Malam Nata’ala, has died following a lengthy sickness, the film industry has confirmed.
The veteran actor, whose career spanned decades in the Hausa‑language film sector (Kannywood), passed away at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.
Malam Nata’ala rose to popularity through his memorable portrayal of an almajiri school teacher in the widely viewed TV series Dadin Kowa, produced by Arewa24. His role made him a household name across Northern Nigeria.
Reports say his health struggles became public months before his death, with appeals for financial assistance for his treatment. The actor’s condition drew attention from fans and industry colleagues alike.
Following his death, many colleagues, fans, and public figures mourned his passing. The Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) Director‑General, Ali Nuhu, posted a tribute on Instagram, while the government of Yobe State described his loss as a significant one for both the entertainment community and the state.
His death highlights again the health and welfare challenges facing entertainers in Nigeria’s regional film industries, and prompts questions about support systems for such industry veterans.
