U.S. Lawmaker Condemns Abduction of Schoolgirls in Kebbi, Calls for Action
A U.S. lawmaker has strongly condemned the recent abduction of schoolgirls from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, calling the attack “outrageous” and urging increased support for Nigeria’s efforts to protect its youth.
The lawmaker, Riley Moore, expressed deep concern over the violent raid, during which several students were kidnapped.
His statement comes amid a broader rescue operation launched by Nigerian security forces.
Moore’s message emphasised the importance of safeguarding education: “We must stand with Nigeria in condemning these kidnappings and work to ensure that children can learn without fear,” he said, urging U.S. support for initiatives that strengthen school security and the protection of human rights.
In Nigeria, national and state leaders have also decried the attack. The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, called on security agencies to act swiftly to rescue the abducted girls.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the incident as a “tragic reminder” of the country’s worsening insecurity, warning that Nigeria’s security architecture must be urgently overhauled.
As the international outcry grows, hopes are high that the combined pressure from both domestic and global actors will help secure the safe return of the girls, while prompting stronger long-term protections for vulnerable schools.
