Tinubu Tells Duke of Edinburgh Nigeria’s Reforms Are Focused on Reducing Poverty
President Bola Tinubu today hosted the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, at the State House in Abuja, asserting that his administration’s economic reforms are structured to uplift young Nigerians and combat poverty.
Tinubu said the reforms place youth empowerment at the core, especially given Nigeria’s demographic profile. He noted that initiatives in education, skills development, and infrastructure are being ramped up to give young people opportunities to thrive.
A key component of the reforms is a special student loan fund, which Tinubu described as a tool to ensure that students who gain admission to universities aren’t forced to drop out due to financial constraints. “Our goal is to use education to drive down poverty,” he said.
The president also highlighted major infrastructure plans, including expanding broadband connectivity through fibre optics, a move he said will promote youth inclusion in Nigeria’s development.
On security, Tinubu acknowledged ongoing challenges but expressed optimism that his administration’s interventions are making progress.
Prince Edward, in turn, praised the president’s reform agenda, saying it has received “positive reviews globally.” He also announced that 320 Nigerian youths would be honoured during a Duke of Edinburgh Award event in Lagos, recognizing their achievements in service, leadership, and personal development.
