Justice Omotosho Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Latest Bail Bid Amid Courtroom Drama
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the most recent bail application filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In his ruling, Justice Omotosho described the bail request as “highly unmeritorious” and said it was barred by the relevant criminal procedure laws in Nigeria.
He cited Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, which, he noted, prohibits a stay of proceedings in an ongoing criminal trial.
The judge also ruled that Kanu’s application did not fall under the recognized types of bail, such as “bail pending trial” or “bail pending appeal,” pointing out that Kanu has already filed his final address.
Omotosho said the court had already received and accepted a motion and a written address from the defence, which it treated as Kanu’s final submission.
During today’s hearing, Kanu strongly objected, arguing that the court lacked legitimacy to rule because he had not yet submitted his final written address.
His outburst prompted the judge to order security personnel to escort him out of the courtroom, after which Omotosho proceeded with the ruling in his absence.
Justice Omotosho added that all the issues raised in Kanu’s motions, and in his written address, would instead be addressed in the court’s upcoming final judgment.
The court had earlier fixed November 20, 2025, for its ruling on the case.
