Navy Steps Up Waterways Security, Private Firm Recruits 1,000 for Coastal Patrol
Nigeria’s navy has deployed ships and helicopters in a significant push to enhance security along the country’s waterways, as part of a new strategy to tackle growing maritime threats.
In addition to the military deployment, a private security firm has reportedly hired 1,000 personnel to assist in monitoring and protecting coastal regions, a move that underscores increasing collaboration between state and non-state actors in securing the country’s maritime domain.
The naval deployment comes amid broader modernization efforts, including the recent commissioning of three new ships and three helicopters into service.
Security experts see this as a proactive response to maritime crime, including piracy, illegal fishing, and oil theft, which continue to threaten Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways.
