Bishop Anagbe Warns: Nigeria Now ‘Deadliest Place on Earth’ for Christians
The Catholic Bishop of Makurdi, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, has delivered a stark warning to U.S. lawmakers: Nigeria has become “the deadliest place on earth to be a Christian.”
Speaking before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa, Anagbe accused militant groups, including Boko Haram and Fulani extremists, of carrying out escalating attacks on Christian communities, often with impunity.
He told Congress that more Christians in Nigeria are killed each year than in the rest of the world combined.
Anagbe further detailed the severe humanitarian consequences of the violence: millions have been displaced, farms destroyed, and food insecurity is worsening in affected regions.
He warned that unless urgent action is taken, Christianity risks being “wiped out” in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt.
Highlighting the urgency of the crisis, the bishop called for more decisive international intervention. He urged that Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for religious freedom be backed by robust sanctions and stronger humanitarian support.
