In the wake of the Federal High Court’s terrorism conviction of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has strongly rejected the ruling as unjust and politically motivated.

Speaking shortly after the life‑sentence verdict, Ejimakor declared, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a terrorist. Ndigbo are not terrorists,” describing the court’s decision as a “travesty of justice.”

According to the lawyer, the prosecution only presented broadcasts made by Kanu rather than evidence of actual violence. He challenged how the court could convict someone for “mere broadcasts from a location that was never named,” noting that no direct link was established between Kanu’s speeches and specific acts of violence.

Ejimakor argued that the sentence of life imprisonment was “overbroad, cruel, and unusual,” given the nature of the evidence.

He also framed the trial as reflecting ethnic prejudice, contending that Kanu, an Igbo man, was being unfairly targeted. “An Igbo man has become the person in Nigeria that should be trampled upon … we are not going to allow it,” he asserted.
