Gunmen ambush Ngige convoy in Anambra, one dead, several wounded
Gunmen disguised in police and military uniforms attacked the convoy of former Anambra State governor and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Wednesday along the Nkpor–Nnobi road in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants opened fire on the lead (pilot) vehicle. A police officer in the pilot car was shot; the attackers reportedly seized his rifle and uniform before fleeing.
A woman who attempted to record the attack on her phone was also shot dead on the spot, while a nearby shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening sustained severe gunshot injuries.
The escort leader accompanying the convoy was wounded, underwent surgery, and is expected to recover. The shop owner is reportedly stable; doctors are to remove bullet fragments from his body.
Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the attack. In a statement, his former media aide confirmed the incident and said that all injured persons are receiving medical attention. He offered condolences to the family of the woman killed during the attack.
The Anambra State Police Command has reportedly launched a manhunt for the gunmen and is investigating the attack. A vehicle, a white Mercedes-Benz SUV, allegedly taken by the assailants has been recovered.
