Peter Obi mourns Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi’s passing

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the respected Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi. In a message shared on social media, Obi described the late cleric as a “man of peace and father-figure” and said he joins “millions of Nigerians” in mourning the loss.

A revered cleric remembered

Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who died on November 26, 2025, at the age of 98, was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential Islamic scholars. He was the supreme leader of the Tijjaniyya Muslim Brotherhood in Nigeria and had devoted decades to Qur’anic education, spiritual mentorship, and promoting peace, tolerance, and unity.

Obi’s tribute underscores the cleric’s moral stature and the void his passing creates. The former Labour Party leader’s statement mirrored those of many, Muslim and non-Muslim, who regarded Sheikh Bauchi as a unifying voice across ethno-religious divides.

Broader national mourning

The death of Sheikh Bauchi has prompted condolences from across Nigeria’s political and religious landscape. Leaders including Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, described him as a “towering figure in Islamic scholarship,” while the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) called the loss “a great blow to the Muslim Ummah.”
