Reps Deputy Speaker Invites Abia Governor Otti to APC, Promises Support
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has publicly invited Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), assuring him of political backing from the party if he decides to defect. The appeal came during a town hall meeting and Christmas food distribution event held at Kalu’s country home in Agbamuzu, Bende Local Government Area on Monday.
Kalu stressed that the APC remains open to leaders ready to work with its platform and urged Otti to formally align with the ruling party in preparation for the 2027 general elections. He told the governor that full support would be available from APC members should he make the switch, a move observers say could reshape the political landscape in the Southeast.
Addressing supporters, the Deputy Speaker also denied having declared any intention to run for governor in 2027, emphasising that he has not yet made up his mind and is awaiting guidance from his party. Kalu noted that political opponents often misinterpret his activities and that he will follow the APC’s leadership on future decisions.
The event saw the distribution of food items and cash to over 100 churches, traditional rulers, local government party members, northern communities, persons with disabilities and various support groups across Abia, marking what Kalu described as a year‑end celebration of resilience and shared hope.
Kalu also used the occasion to reiterate his confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, encouraging Nigerians to support the president and the APC’s broader goals ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political watchers say the invitation to Otti highlights intensified efforts by the APC to expand its influence in the Southeast ahead of the next electoral cycle, as opposition and ruling parties vie for strategic alignments in key states.
