Presidential Tax Committee Commends Kogi for Early Adoption of Tax Reforms
The Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms has praised the Kogi State Government for swiftly adopting the Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law, a key component of Nigeria’s ongoing tax overhaul. The commendation was shared by the committee’s chairman, Taiwo Oyedele, in a statement posted on social media.
According to a report by the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) referenced by the committee, Kogi is among the early adopters of the harmonised tax framework, alongside states such as Anambra, Ekiti, Gombe, Nasarawa, Plateau and Zamfara. The Board described the domestication of the harmonised tax law as a “major milestone” in modernising Nigeria’s tax administration system.
Under the harmonised framework, multiple existing taxes are streamlined into a clear and approved list, aiming to eliminate multiple taxation, end unlawful levies and roadblocks, and enhance transparency through reduced cash handling and increased use of technology. These measures are also intended to strengthen safeguards against revenue leakages.
The JRB noted that aligning state tax laws with the national framework boosts taxpayer confidence, improves compliance, and helps create a more investor‑friendly business environment.
Reacting to the committee’s commendation, Ismaila Isah, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, said the new tax law would enhance Kogi State’s revenue mobilisation efforts while tackling issues linked to multiple taxation and illegal levies. He highlighted the collaborative effort between the state’s Internal Revenue Service and the JRB’s framework as evidence of the state’s commitment to transparent and efficient tax governance that supports economic growth.
Governor Ododo recently signed the Kogi State Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law, 2025 into law, aligning the state’s tax system with national reform initiatives championed by the federal government.
This recognition underscores Kogi’s proactive role in implementing national tax reforms aimed at simplifying tax administration, enhancing compliance and fostering economic development.
