Abia State Inaugurates New Health Centre and 31 Buildings Donated by Local Philanthropist
The Abia State Government has formally inaugurated the purpose‑built Ndi Okereke Anam Primary Healthcare Centre and a host of other community facilities generously donated by Chief James Ume (Ikem Abam) to his community in Arochukwu Local Government Area.
The newly commissioned health facility, built specifically for the Ndi Okereke Abam community, was handed over to the state for public use by the donor at a ceremony on Tuesday. Alongside the health centre, Chief Ume also presented 30 residential units for the underprivileged and a church hall in Idima Abam as part of his contribution to local development.
Governor Alex Otti, represented at the event by Secretary to the State Government Professor Kenneth Kalu, praised Chief Ume for aligning his philanthropic gesture with the state’s development goals and encouraged beneficiaries to maintain and protect the facilities. He described the projects as examples of effective public‑private partnership that can improve life for ordinary residents.
State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, highlighted the modern features of the new health centre, saying it was equipped with multi‑parameter monitors, oxygen delivery systems, a modern laboratory, ultrasound equipment, family planning clinics, and a functional pharmacy. These facilities are expected to expand access to quality care for residents.
Professor Uche also appealed to well‑to‑do citizens to support health insurance registration for grassroots populations, stressing that achieving health equity and universal coverage requires both government and community involvement.
Chief Ume explained that his investment was meant to complement government efforts in the area, particularly following improvements such as the Abam Arochukwu Road. His donation is part of a broader push to spur social development and improve living standards in his home community.
