APC Accuses Opposition of Failing on All Fronts
All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has accused Nigeria’s opposition parties of being “directionless” and failing grossly in their role, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s spokesman, Seye Oladejo, the APC expressed “grave concern” over what it sees as the degeneration of the opposition from credible watchdogs into a collection of opportunistic players. According to Oladejo, the absence of a strong opposition undermines Nigeria’s democratic health.
“Rather than serve as credible watchdogs, policy challengers, or intellectual counterweights to the ruling party, the opposition has degenerated into a coalition of desperation, confusion, and hypocrisy — the very bane of Nigeria’s democratic growth.”
The statement went on to argue that the opposition lacks leadership, coherence, and a binding political philosophy. The APC contrasted this with its own genesis, pointing to the past opposition role of President Bola Tinubu, whom the party described as having built a “formidable coalition rooted in principles, ideas, and structure.”
Oladejo also claimed that none of the opposition parties has offered a credible roadmap for tackling key national issues such as the economy, security, education or social development, accusing them instead of defaulting to demonising government policies without offering viable alternatives.
He warned that the current state of the opposition risks democratic disengagement. “When one side of the political divide consistently fails to evolve, citizens naturally disengage from the process,” the statement read.
The 2027 election cycle is looming and the APC says it is watching “with grave concern” the opposition’s ability to fulfil its democratic role.
