Arne Slot Appears to Take Subtle Dig at Wayne Rooney After Liverpool’s Win Over Real Madrid
Liverpool manager Arne Slot seemed to aim a light-hearted jab at Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney following his side’s impressive 1–0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League.
During Amazon Prime’s post-match coverage, Slot was asked whether Liverpool’s recent wins had lifted the mood on Merseyside. The Dutchman replied with a grin, “It’s clear that it’s nicer when you win games than when you lose games as a manager. Am I right or am I wrong, eh?”, while glancing toward Rooney, who was part of the punditry team.
The playful comment was widely interpreted as a cheeky reference to Rooney’s underwhelming record in management. Since retiring, the former United captain has had stints with Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City, and most recently Plymouth Argyle, but has struggled to make a lasting impact. His best managerial points average stands at just 1.18, and he departed Plymouth after only seven months in charge.
Rooney’s Criticism of Liverpool
Rooney has been openly critical of Liverpool’s performances this season on his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. He previously accused the Premier League side of “lacking leadership” during a four-game winless run, remarks that drew a response from Reds captain Virgil van Dijk.
Defending his comments, Rooney said:
“Virgil’s been one of the best defenders in the world for years, but he hasn’t been at his best this season. As captain, when things aren’t going right, your job is to talk to your teammates and show leadership. That’s all I was saying.”
Mixed Reception for Alexander-Arnold at Anfield
It wasn’t just Rooney who found himself in the spotlight at Anfield. Former Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, now with Real Madrid, was greeted with loud boos from home supporters when he came on as a substitute late in the game.
Despite the hostile atmosphere, Alexander-Arnold shared a warm post-match embrace with Slot. When asked about their exchange, the Liverpool boss said:
“He lost, so that’s tough. I told him something like ‘keep going.’ He’s been special for this club and for me, a special person. I’ll always give him a hug when I see him.”
Eyes on Manchester City
Liverpool’s attention now turns to a crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City. A win over Pep Guardiola’s side would strengthen their title credentials and confirm that Slot’s men are firmly back on track after a rocky spell earlier in the campaign.
