Early Life and Education
Audu Ogbeh was born on 28 July 1947 in Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria. He hails from the Idoma ethnic group and grew up in a community deeply rooted in farming traditions. He attended St. Francis Catholic Practicing School, Otukpo, before proceeding to King’s College, Lagos.
Ogbeh continued his studies at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree while specializing in French. Before entering politics and public service, he strengthened his academic background by earning a Master’s degree in Literature from the University of Toulouse in France.
A Career in Politics
During the Second Republic, Audu Ogbeh was a member of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and began his political career as a lawmaker. Later on, he was named Minister of Steel Development and subsequently Minister of Communications.
When he was appointed National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2001, his impact on Nigerian politics increased. Well-known for his candor and commitment to democratic ideals, he had a significant impact on the party’s course.
President Muhammadu Buhari named him Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2015, a role he maintained till 2019. In order to increase food security, encourage domestic rice production, and lessen Nigeria’s reliance on food imports, Ogbeh implemented measures throughout his administration.
