Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Gavi will be sidelined for around five months after undergoing surgery on his right knee.

The 21-year-old, who played in Barça’s first two games of the season, sustained the injury during training in August. There were initial concerns that he might have suffered a repeat of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that kept him out for 11 months in 2023.

However, scans revealed he had avoided another ACL rupture. Instead, doctors identified cartilage damage, which required an operation. In a club statement, Barcelona explained:

“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus. Recovery time is estimated at four to five months.”

Manager Hansi Flick admitted the absence is a big blow for the team but backed Gavi to return stronger:

“He’s a player with a big heart and a lot of emotion. It’s not easy for us because he has huge quality, but everyone here will support him to reach his best level again.”

Since making his debut in 2021, Gavi has become a key figure for both club and country. He has already won 28 caps for Spain, scored 10 goals in 155 appearances for Barcelona, and lifted five trophies.

Barcelona currently sit second in La Liga, five points behind leaders Real Madrid but with a game in hand.
