Bayelsa State has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.

According to reports, Ewhrudjakpo collapsed in his office at the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa around 1:30 p.m. while attending to official duties. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where medical personnel placed him in the Emergency Unit and later transferred him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite sustained efforts to revive him, he was later confirmed dead by hospital sources.

Ewhrudjakpo’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, confirmed the collapse but did not offer detailed information on the circumstances leading to his death. Although authorities have not officially stated the cause, some sources suggest it may have been related to a cardiac emergency.

Born on September 5, 1965, Ewhrudjakpo had served as Bayelsa’s deputy governor since 2020. Before holding the deputy governorship, he represented Bayelsa West in the Senate and previously served as Commissioner for Works in the state. He was regarded as a dedicated public servant and a prominent figure in Bayelsa politics.

Political figures and party leaders have expressed deep sorrow at his passing. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described his death as an “inexplicable loss,” praising Ewhrudjakpo as a principled and faithful member who made significant contributions to the state and his party.

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, also Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, extended heartfelt condolences to Bayelsa Governor Senator Douye Diri, the government, and the people of Bayelsa, noting that Ewhrudjakpo served with distinction and commitment despite health challenges.

As details continue to unfold, the state and national political community remain in grief over the unexpected loss of one of its key leaders.
