Chef and Food Network Star Anne Burrell’s Death Ruled a Suicide
Renowned chef and popular TV host Anne Burrell, best known for her vibrant energy on Worst Cooks in America, sadly passed away by suicide on June 17, 2025, at the age of 55.
According to the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Burrell’s death was caused by acute intoxication from a combination of substances, including diphenhydramine, cetirizine (both antihistamines), ethanol (alcohol), and amphetamine.
She was discovered unresponsive in the shower of her Brooklyn home by her husband, Stuart Claxton, and emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Medical examiners confirmed suicide as the official determination nearly five weeks later.
Anne Burrell was born on September 21, 1969, in Cazenovia, New York, and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1996. Her career included teaching at the Institute of Culinary Education and heading renowned kitchens in New York City before transitioning to television. She became a defining figure on Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which ran for nine seasons—and rose to household fame as co-host of Worst Cooks in America starting in 2010.
