Davido Reveals He Skipped University to Perform in Ibadan in 2011
Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido (real name David Adeleke) has opened up about a pivotal moment in his early career, sharing that in 2011 he skipped school to perform in Ibadan.
From Lecture Halls to the Stage
Davido posted on his X account (formerly Twitter) that during his time at Babcock University, he left campus to join the “Lynxxx and Friends Tour” with friends and collaborators, including Asa (Asa Asika), Peju, B Red and Sina, on a show in Ibadan. He wrote:
“In 2011, I skipped school to perform in Ibadan. Asa, Peju, B Red and Sina picked me up from Babcock and we drove to join the Lynxxx and Friends Tour. I had no idea it was going to air on SoundCity, and when my pops saw it I got in so much trouble.”
He reflected on the moment with a sense of full‐circle achievement:
“14 years later, we destroyed the stadium. The 5ive Alive run across Nigeria has been one for the books.”
A Moment of Risk That Paid Off
At the time, the decision posed a risk, Davido acknowledged that his unexpected appearance on SoundCity got the attention of his father, which led to him getting into trouble.
Today, the same city of Ibadan now features in his nationally celebrated tour, and the singer views this journey as part of his growth and legacy.
Message to His Peers
In his post, Davido also used his story as a motivation to fellow artists and creatives:
“To my peers, let’s build back home and give back to our roots. Big love to all our sponsors for backing this historic tour.”
