The Ekiti State Government has proposed an additional ₦300 million in its 2026 budget for the construction of a new governor and deputy governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, despite earlier expenditures of ₦470 million on the same project this year.

A review of the state’s 2026 budget proposal reveals that the allocation for the Abuja lodge was included while a contract worth ₦320 million was previously awarded for a guest house chalet at the Government House, according to the Ekiti State Open Contracting Portal.

The renewed budgeting for the lodge has drawn criticism against the backdrop of resource prioritisation concerns. A separate examination of the Ekiti 2024 audited financial statements shows that 35 government agencies received no funding for capital projects, despite having a combined capital budget of ₦3.3 billion.

Critics say the continued funding for high-profile infrastructure like the Abuja lodge, amid gaps in financing for key ministries and offices, raises questions about transparency and fiscal discipline in managing public resources.

This development occurs as Ekiti State pursues significant infrastructure projects, including the recently inaugurated commercial flight operations at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, which has seen substantial investment from the state government this year.

Supporters of the administration argue that long-term investments in strategic facilities may boost the state’s profile and service delivery, but opponents insist that basic public services and capital needs at home should take precedence over additional spending on lodges and official residences.

The proposed budget is expected to be debated and finalised by the Ekiti State House of Assembly early next year as part of the broader ₦415.57 billion 2026 fiscal plan presented by Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
