Anyone living or working in the affected area who develops these flu-like symptoms, especially adults aged 50 and older, smokers, and those with chronic lung or immune issues, is urged to seek medical attention immediately.
Where Did It Come From?
Health authorities traced the likely source to cooling towers in the area. The NYC Health Department tested 11 towers, found the bacteria Legionella pneumophila in some, and mandated remediation within 24 hours of initial positive results.
Cleaning and decontamination efforts have since been completed for all the towers involved
What Is Legionnaires’ Disease?
Legionnaires’ is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which thrive in warm water settings, such as cooling towers, hot tubs, humidifiers, plumbing systems, and large air conditioners.
It’s not contagious, meaning it doesn’t spread person-to-person, but it’s inhaled through contaminated water mist or vapor.
When caught early, the disease is treatable with antibiotics, though complications are more serious in high‑risk individuals.
Can I Keep Using My Water?
Yes. Officials have confirmed that tap water, baths, showers, cooking, and home air conditioning remain safe to use, just avoid inhaling mist from suspect cooling towers and report symptoms promptly.
