Tragedy struck in Serbia’s top flight on Monday when 44-year-old coach Mladen Zizović collapsed during a fixture between FK Radnički 1923 and FK Mladost Luĉani, before ultimately succumbing to his condition.

The Bosnian-born former midfielder fell on the touchline and was given urgent medical assistance before being transported to a nearby hospital. Moments later, word of his death reached the stadium, prompting match officials to bring the game to a halt just before halftime.

Footage from the scene revealed visibly distraught players and staff as the awful news was confirmed.

Zizović had only been appointed head coach of Radnički 1923 on October 23 — just under two weeks prior to the collapse.

In a club statement, Radnički said: “Our club has lost not only a great professional but above all a good man, a friend and a sportsman who, with his knowledge, energy and nobility, has left a deep mark on the hearts of all who knew him.”

The Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina also expressed deep sorrow, stating that during his playing career Zizović featured for several top Bosnian clubs and wore his country’s national team jersey.

The Football Association of Serbia (FSS) extended its condolences, adding: “Your love for football and the mark you left will remain with us forever.”

Tributes poured in from across the region, including from heavyweight Serbian side Red Star Belgrade, which offered its “deepest condolences” to Zizović’s family and to the Radnički community.
