Jonathan Warns Against Reckless Politics: “Politics Is Not for Rascals”
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has sounded the alarm over the deteriorating tone of political discourse in Nigeria, warning that democracy is being “suffocated” by reckless and unruly political conduct. His remarks came during the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, which also marked his 68th birthday.
Jonathan urged political actors to anchor their leadership in responsibility, nation-building, and restraint, stating that democratic stability depends on civility and genuine accountability.
“Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” he said, lamenting a growing wave of aggressive rhetoric and hostile behavior that he believes is undermining democratic resilience across the continent.
Reflecting on his foundation’s work over the past decade, Jonathan highlighted its role in promoting diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation, and strengthening democratic institutions.
He also expressed concern over the recent surge in violent attacks and abductions across Nigeria, calling on leaders at all levels to take their duty to protect citizens seriously, stressing that safeguarding lives is essential for preserving the nation’s democratic order.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Jonathan’s legacy, particularly his concession of defeat in 2015, which he said prevented a potential national crisis.
Shettima added that Nigeria’s democracy has endured in part because of leaders like Jonathan, who place national interest above personal ambition, and noted that the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has become a model for post-office service and peace leadership.
Also speaking, newly elected PDP national chairman Taminu Turaki lauded the foundation as one of Africa’s most respected organizations in peacebuilding, mediation, and democratic strengthening.
