Kaduna Anglican Diocese confirms: Abducted vicar killed in captivity, wife and daughter still held

The Anglican Diocese of Kaduna has announced the death of Venerable Edwin Achi, the vicar of Ebenezer Anglican Church in Ungwan Maijero, Kaduna State, after he was abducted by suspected bandits in late October.

Achi, along with his wife (a customs officer) and their daughter, were kidnapped from their home in the Nissi community of Chikun Local Government Area on the night of 28 October 2025.

The abductors had sent the family proof-of-life photos and demanded a ransom of ₦600 million for their release.

In the statement confirming the death, the Diocese described Achi’s loss as “painful,” mourning his devotion, humility and service to God.

It also announced the cancellation of a scheduled church event in his honour and urged prayers for the safe release of his still-kidnapped wife and daughter.

A family member, using social media, appealed to authorities to intervene, writing, “They killed him. These monsters killed him.”

The tragic death of Achi adds to rising concern over banditry and kidnappings in Kaduna State and underscores the vulnerability of clergy and civilians alike.
