Lagos State Cancels 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, Calls for Prayer and Reflection
The Lagos State Government has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, a major New Year’s Eve celebration that was due to take place on December 31, 2025 across several venues in the state. The decision was approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu and communicated through a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.
The annual Greater Lagos Fiesta, also known as the Countdown to the New Year, traditionally attracts thousands of residents and visitors with live music, fireworks, cultural displays and performances by top entertainment acts. This year’s edition was called off hours before it was set to begin, marking a significant departure from the state’s festive calendar.
Instead of attending large public festivities, Governor Sanwo‑Olu has urged Lagosians to spend the period in personal and collective prayers for the nation, Lagos State and its people. He encouraged residents to pray for continued prosperity, effective leadership, peace, productivity and the overall wellbeing of the state.
In his message, the governor expressed optimism for 2026, describing the upcoming year as one with great promise for both Lagos and Nigeria. He also extended New Year wishes to all residents, stressing the importance of peace and harmony as the state transitions into the new year.
No specific reason for the cancellation was outlined in the official communication, though the shift from celebration to reflection suggests a focus on spirituality and unity as 2025 draws to a close.
The cancellation may impact performers, vendors and businesses that typically benefit economically from the annual event, which has also been viewed as a platform for promoting tourism and cultural engagement in Lagos.
