Major Disruption at Birmingham Airport After Emergency Landing
A light aircraft carrying two crew members and a passenger was forced to make an emergency landing on Wednesday at Birmingham Airport after experiencing urgent landing gear issues on its way to Belfast International Airport. Upon touching down, the main undercarriage collapsed, causing the runway to be completely closed from around 2:40 pm until operations resumed at approximately 8 pm that evening.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, none of those on board were seriously hurt—though one person did sustain minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Emergency crews, including paramedics and police, responded swiftly, and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch dispatched a specialized team to begin investigating immediately.
The disruption rippled across the airport, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. At least 25 departures were cancelled and numerous inbound flights had to be redirected to airports like Manchester and East Midlands. Many people were forced to wait at the terminal, unsure of the status of their flights.
Even after the runway reopened, ripple effects continued into the next day—as dozens of flights remained delayed or grounded. Travelers were strongly advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.
