A huge sinkhole opened up in central Bangkok on Wednesday, swallowing several cars and electricity poles, and forcing the evacuation of nearby buildings, including a hospital and a police station.

The collapse occurred along Samsen Road, directly in front of Vajira Hospital. The sinkhole, estimated at 30 meters wide and 50 meters deep, caused part of the busy road to cave in, sending shockwaves through the area. Viral videos on social media captured the dramatic moment as the ground gave way, dragging vehicles and utility poles into the hole.

Authorities believe the sinkhole formed due to a tunnel construction project beneath the road, linked to the city’s dual-track railway expansion. A burst water pipe may have worsened the collapse by washing away soil around the tunnel structure. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt explained that once the ground slid into the unfinished tunnel, the entire section collapsed.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported, though three vehicles were damaged. Vajira Hospital temporarily suspended outpatient services, while emergency and inpatient care remain available. Residents, hospital staff, and police officers from the nearby Samsen Police Station were evacuated as a precaution. Utilities, including power and water, were cut off to prevent further risks.

By afternoon, engineers had managed to stabilize the site and stop further ground movement. Authorities are now working to backfill the sinkhole and restore utilities, while warning that heavy rains during the monsoon season could complicate recovery efforts.

The incident has sparked public concern over urban planning and infrastructure safety, as Bangkok continues to expand its underground rail and transport systems.
