In the early hours of Wednesday, a large sinkhole tore open a section of road in Bangkok, swallowing vehicles and collapsing power lines, while triggering evacuations and shutting down medical services in the area.

What Happened

The collapse occurred on Samsen Road, directly in front of Vajira Hospital and adjacent to the Samsen Metropolitan Police Station.

The sinkhole is estimated to be about 30 × 30 meters in width and around 50 meters deep.

Power poles and underground utilities were dragged into the void, and a burst water pipe flooded the opening.

Social media footage captured the dramatic moment the road surface gave way, pulling in cars as the earth collapsed beneath.

Impact & Response

Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported.

However, three vehicles were damaged in the collapse.

Outpatient services at Vajira Hospital have been suspended temporarily, although emergency and inpatient services remain in operation.

Nearby residents, hospital staff, and the local police station were evacuated as a safety precaution.

Authorities cut off electricity and water in the affected area to prevent further hazards.

Possible Causes

Officials suggest the collapse was triggered by underground construction of a subway line and station beneath the road.

The joint where the tunnel meets a new station may have given way, allowing soil to slip downward.

Heavy rains and a leaking water pipe appear to have further eroded the ground, accelerating the collapse.

Outlook & Concerns

By mid-morning, efforts were reported to have stabilized ground movement, though the site is under continued monitoring.

Authorities plan to backfill the crater and restore utilities as quickly as possible.

Given that Bangkok is currently in its monsoon season, officials warn further rainfall may risk further collapse or widening of the hole.
