New Generation of Nigerian Artists Featured in “The Legacy” Exhibition

Twenty-eight young and rising stars of Nigerian contemporary art will be on display at The Legacy Exhibition, opening September 20, 2025, at the 1952 Africa Art Gallery in Lagos. The show is a joint presentation by 1952 Africa and the Life In My City Art Festival (LIMCAF).

These artists are past winners of LIMCAF’s annual competition, and their works are now seen as defining the future direction of Nigerian and African art.

The theme of the exhibition, “Tomorrow’s Masters, Today,” emphasizes how this new generation is not merely inheriting artistic traditions, but actively shaping them.

The art on show spans a wide range of media, painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography, and textile art, giving viewers a panoramic look at the creativity and cultural depth emerging in Nigeria’s contemporary art scene.

Amanda Madumere, Programme Manager at 1952 Africa, described the exhibition as “a powerful affirmation of legacy in motion,” saying that the featured artists are already influencing the narrative of African art.

Adaora Oji-Ngwu, Programme Director at LIMCAF, said the exhibition reflects nearly two decades of effort to discover and support emerging talents across Nigeria.

The Legacy Exhibition aims to serve as a bridge between generations of artists, to honour past achievements, and to assert Africa’s place in the global creative landscape.
