Niger State Police Evacuate Explosive Device Discovered on Rural Road
Security agencies have responded swiftly after farmers in Ganaru community, Zugurma District of Mashegu Local Government Area discovered a suspected explosive device planted along a roadside, prompting concerns about possible terror activity in the area.
The device was spotted on Tuesday morning by local farmers heading to their farms, who initially reported seeing multiple objects they believed were explosives.
Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, later clarified that a single explosive device was confirmed by police, dismissing earlier claims of three. He said bomb disposal specialists have been deployed to professionally evacuate or, if necessary, detonate the device to prevent harm.
In a statement, the police chief urged residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, assuring the public that security personnel are handling the situation and that there is no immediate threat to commuters or villagers.
Local authorities, including Mashegu LGA Chairman Jibrin Egade, confirmed the area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure to avoid potential casualties while specialists examined the object. Egade expressed shock, noting that Ganaru is typically a peaceful community without a history of such security challenges.
The discovery follows recent violent incidents in parts of Niger State, where attacks by gunmen have resulted in multiple deaths and abductions, highlighting ongoing security concerns in rural communities.
Security operatives continue to monitor the scene and reassure residents that efforts are underway to ensure their safety and prevent any further threats.
