Nigerian Army Allegedly Prioritises Rustlers, Recovers 91 Cattle — Critics Cry “Terrorists Ignored”Nigerian Army Allegedly Prioritises Rustlers, Recovers 91 Cattle, Critics Cry “Terrorists Ignored”

Troops of the Nigerian Army, specifically those attached to 6 Brigade under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), carried out recent operations in southern parts of Taraba State between 24 and 25 November 2025, resulting in the recovery of 91 cattle believed to have been rustled.

The army described the operation as part of broader “clearance operations” targeting armed herders and criminal groups accused of violent attacks on farms, displacement of residents, and disruption of agricultural activities in local government areas such as Takum and Donga, particularly around hideouts in the Akesha, Zambana Forest, and Ayu Village.

According to the army’s statement, credible intelligence prompted the troops’ advance on the identified hideouts, forcing criminals to flee and abandon the stolen cattle. The recovered livestock were secured and handed over to military control pending verification of ownership. Officials said that no cattle will be returned without proper vetting and promised compensation to farmers whose fields were damaged during the incursions.

The incident has sparked outrage among some commentators and media outlets, who argue that while the army is seizing rustled cattle, it is neglecting ongoing threats from terrorists and abductors, implying a misplaced focus of security resources.

The controversy raises broader concerns about the military’s priorities amid a surge in violence, kidnapping, and terror attacks across parts of the country, with critics questioning whether protecting livestock is being treated as more urgent than protecting human lives.
