Nigerian Army Operation in Kano Reclaims Territory, Inflicts Heavy Casualties on Bandits
In a significant security operation in northern Nigeria, troops from the 3rd Brigade, Nigerian Army successfully engaged a group of armed bandits in the Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State, killing 19 and capturing key equipment while suffering two soldier fatalities and the loss of a local vigilante.
The Operation
According to a statement by Captain Babatunde Zubairu, spokesperson for the 3rd Brigade, the operation was launched on Saturday following intelligence of bandit movement in the Ungwan Tudu, Ungwan Tsamiya and Goron Dutse axis of Shanono.
Troops, acting in a joint security capacity, confronted the gunmen who had invaded the area on motorcycles. A prolonged exchange of fire ensued.
During the pursuit that followed the initial contact, soldiers reportedly recovered several motorcycles and seized two mobile phones from the fleeing bandits.
Casualties and Impact
The army reported that 19 bandits were killed during the clash.
On the government side, two soldiers lost their lives, along with one member of the local vigilante unit.
Captain Zubairu said operations are ongoing in the area to clear any remaining criminals and to secure vulnerable communities.
Broader Context
Residents in the border region between Kano State and its neighbour Katsina State, including Bagwai and Tsanyawa local government areas, have recently suffered fresh waves of attacks. These have included abductions, cattle rustling and large-scale raids on livestock and people.
The recent military action appears to be part of a broader attempt to stem the escalating violence in this part of Kano State.
