NIS Faces Criticism as Planned System Maintenance Causes Passport Delays
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is facing renewed public criticism following temporary disruptions on its digital passport platform, a setback that coincides with ongoing concerns about increased passport fees and service efficiency.
In a public advisory issued earlier this week, the NIS announced that its Passport Digital Platform would undergo scheduled maintenance, a process expected to slow down or temporarily interrupt access to certain passport services. Officials described the move as part of broader efforts to improve the agency’s digital infrastructure and enhance long-term service delivery.
The announcement, however, has reignited frustration among some applicants who cite rising costs and inconsistent service performance. Passport fees were recently adjusted nationwide, with the price of a 32-page passport reportedly rising from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000, alongside higher charges for longer-validity booklets. Critics argue that the latest disruption contradicts the government’s promise of faster and more efficient passport processing following the fee increase.
While the NIS has emphasized that the maintenance is routine and necessary, the timing has drawn attention due to high seasonal demand for new and renewed passports. The agency has not confirmed whether the disruptions will extend processing timelines.
Broader issues around passport issuance have also resurfaced. In recent months, the NIS has faced legal and public pressure over delays, including a court ruling ordering damages for failure to issue a passport within the statutory timeframe. At the same time, NIS leadership has continued to pledge reforms, stressing the importance of improved customer service and transparency across its operations.
For now, applicants are advised to anticipate possible delays until the digital platform upgrade is completed.
