“Nollywood Actresses Seem More Focused on Body Enhancements Than Content”,  Bimbo Akintola Speaks Candidly

In a recent interview with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Nollywood’s seasoned thespian Bimbo Akintola didn’t hold back. She expressed concern that today’s generation of actresses is seemingly more invested in looks and cosmetic enhancements, like the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), than the quality of their craft.

From Grit to Glamour

Looking back fondly, Akintola recalled the earlier era of Nollywood:

“When we started, it wasn’t about glamour. Icons like Sola Sobowale and Joke Silva were driven by sheer passion. We worked all night, no talk of food or luxury, just relentless dedication to storytelling.”

The stage, she added, was a place where the art did the talking, not appearances.

Change in Focus

Fast forward to today, and the landscape feels quite different:

“Now, it’s ‘My makeup isn’t right,’ or ‘I can’t wear this outfit.’ There’s a spike in BBLs because so many are more worried about how they look than what they perform.”

Akintola regards this shift as worrying, concerned that the emphasis on image is overshadowing the essence of acting.
