Nollywood Has Shifted From Passion to Appearance, Says Bimbo Akintola
Abuja, August 22, 2025, Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has raised concerns about the evolving priorities in Nigeria’s film industry, lamenting that appearances now overshadow storytelling and genuine devotion to the craft.
Reflecting on the early days of her career, Akintola recalled how actors were fueled by hunger and passion rather than money or glamour. She described a time when performers, including legends like Joke Silva and Shola Sobowale, would work through the night without concern for compensation, sleep, or meals, all driven by a shared commitment to make a difference through their art.
In contrast, she observed that many modern actors are increasingly preoccupied with their appearance—obsessing over makeup, outfits, and even cosmetic procedures such as Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs). “Everyone’s BBLing,” she remarked, pointing to a growing trend that she believes detracts from the essence of filmmaking.
Akintola underscored that while looks are transient, true artistry endures. She urged the industry to reclaim its narrative focus, emphasizing that content, not appearance, should remain at the heart of performance.
