Nollywood Star Funke Akindele Shares How She Turned Minor Roles Into Her First ₦1 Million
Renowned Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed how her early years in the entertainment industry, starting from small parts and frequent rejections, culminated in her first major payday of ₦1 million and set the stage for her rise to stardom.
From “waka-pass” roles to a breakthrough
Akindele said she began pursuing acting in 1996, taking on minor “waka-pass” roles and attending audition after audition where she heard “no” repeatedly.
Her big break came in 1999 when she was cast as “Bisi” in the TV series I Need to Know, a role that not only brought visibility but also her first major financial reward.
A near-miss and mentor support
According to Akindele, the role was almost lost to her after producers felt she was “overacting” during the pilot episode. She recalled being asked to go home, study the character again, and return stronger.
It was only after her younger sister helped her adopt a more teenage tone for the character that she regained the role, and ultimately the success it brought.
First ₦1 million and how she spent it
When she finally received payment for the series, the total amount reached around ₦1 million, a figure that amazed her considering her earlier struggles. “I was like me that always jump for bike,” she said about her earlier life.
She went on to describe how the earnings were used: first, she showed the money to her mother, who advised her to pay her tithe. After that, Akindele treated herself to a wardrobe revamp, new shoes, clothes, bags, something she had lacked before.
A lesson in perseverance
Akindele’s story underscores the value of persistence and embracing small beginnings. From countless auditions and minor roles to that one major “yes,” she transformed her career trajectory. Her journey serves as both inspiration and a reminder of how foundational moments can shape long-term success.
