Ogun State to Screen Ogijo Residents for Lead Poisoning

The government of Ogijo, a community in Ogun State, will begin free lead-poisoning tests for residents starting Monday, following public concern over possible contamination.

The move follows the recent shutdown of seven used lead-acid battery (ULAB) recycling industries in Ogijo, which authorities suspect may have exposed the community to hazardous lead pollution.

According to a statement issued by the government, a “Lead Testing Centre” has been established at the Ogijo Primary Health Centre, fully equipped with medical personnel and equipment, to conduct the free tests.

The state’s Environment Commissioner, Ola Oresanya, also announced that a process audit will begin on the seven shuttered industries. Any company that fails to meet the newly required environmental and safety standards will remain closed until they comply fully.

Residents and community leaders have been urged to take advantage of the free testing and to prioritise their health over economic interests, especially given the potential serious risks associated with lead exposure.

As the evaluation begins, many in Ogijo hope the screening and audits will bring clarity and safety to what has become a growing public-health concern.
