Orji Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Senate and a senator representing Abia North, has announced his intention to run for the Senate presidency in the upcoming 10th National Assembly.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) maintained a majority in the Senate with 57 seats and its senators have been lobbying for support in their bid for the position.
Other senators, including Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Sani Musa (Niger), Barau Jibrin (Kano), and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), are also said to be interested in the position.
The final candidates for the post will be largely determined by zoning; while the APC has not yet zoned the Senate presidency, it is likely that the post will be zoned to the South for power balance.
Kalu has stated that it is his turn to become Senate President, being a ranking lawmaker and from the South East. He has pledged to work for the entire nation if elected and has called on Nigerians to pray for him to become Senate President.
