Presidency asks Nigerians to expose VIPs still using police escorts
The federal government has called on Nigerians to report private citizens and VIPs who continue using police escorts, contrary to the directive issued by Bola Tinubu ordering the withdrawal of police protection for non‑essential individuals.
During a recent media appearance, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Daniel Bwala, urged citizens to record evidence, such as photos or videos, when they notice police officers accompanying celebrities, businesspeople or other private individuals who are no longer entitled to escorts.
Bwala clarified that the directive does not apply to all public officers; only certain key government officials with sensitive roles will continue to receive authorised security protection.
Where protection remains necessary, alternative agencies such as Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) or State Security Service (SSS) may be assigned, not the regular police.
The call to the public comes as part of efforts to enforce the repositioning of police resources, redirecting them from VIP protection back to core security duties amid nationwide insecurity challenges.
