Pro‑Wike Supporters Storm PDP National Secretariat as Faction Takes Over
Tension escalated at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat in Wadata Plaza on Monday, as supporters of the Wike‑aligned faction marched in, demanding the exit of the Umar Damagum‑led leadership.
The protesters, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, accused the current National Working Committee (NWC) under Damagum of mismanagement and called for an immediate handover.
Their action coincided with the formal resumption of Mohammed Abdulrahman as acting national chairman, a position backed by a powerful faction loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike.
Abdulrahman arrived at the secretariat around midday, flanked by supporters, and claimed the chairman’s office, declaring that he had “officially resumed.”
The clash reflects a deepening rift within the PDP. The Wike‑aligned group previously suspended key figures from the Damagum-led NWC, including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and the party’s legal adviser.
As security operatives were deployed around the party headquarters to prevent violence, Abdulrahman addressed journalists, promising to “heal the party’s wounds” and reposition the PDP ahead of its next convention.
He announced plans to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting soon and called on all stakeholders to support his vision for a more inclusive PDP.
