Reekado Banks Reflects on Leaving Mavin Records Earlier Than He Should Have

Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has candidly shared that he left Mavin Records, the label that launched his career, a bit too early.

He first broke into the music scene under Mavin Records, earning the Rookie of the Year award at The Headies in 2014 and the hotly debated Next Rated award in 2015. Despite this momentum, he departed from the label in 2018 and founded his own imprint, Banks Music.

In a recent interview on The Echoo Room with reality star Teddy A, Reekado Banks admitted that his exit didn’t stem from any conflict. Instead, it sprang from youthful eagerness and a desire for independence, he realized, relatively soon, that he might have jumped the gun.

He explained, “I didn’t leave because of a dispute. Honestly, I was young and laser-focused on what I wanted, I just wanted out. My contract had actually expired two years earlier. It was a three-year deal, but I stuck around for five without revisiting the terms.

“When the moment came, I felt I could go it alone. I went for it, and only afterward did I understand just how premature it was,” he reflected.
