RIP Mom”: Onyeka Onwenu’s Son Tijani Marks First Anniversary of Her Passing
On July 30, 2025, Tijani Ogunlende, son of the late iconic singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, shared an emotional tribute online in remembrance of his mother’s first death anniversary. His simple yet poignant message read:
“A year ago today. RIP Mom. July 30 2024.”
Remembering the Moment
Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion”, passed away on July 30, 2024, following a performance at the 80th birthday celebration of Stella Okoli in Lagos. She collapsed shortly afterward and was pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island.
Legacy and Farewell
Her funeral took place exactly one month later, on August 30, 2024, at Ebony Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi. True to her wishes, the ceremony was kept private and dignified, with one of her sons placing a Bible on top of her coffin as a final farewell.
An Icon Remembered
Onyeka Onwenu’s career spanned decades and mediums—crossover music, film, journalism, and public service. Celebrated as an elite presence in Nigerian entertainment and activism, she starred in films like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart, while also serving as Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development. She is survived by her two sons, including Tijani, whose Instagram tribute rekindled community memories of her impact.
