Rivers Lawmakers Reject Fubara’s ₦100,000 “Christmas Gift” as Wike Warns Against Automatic 2027 Ticket
The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected and returned ₦100,000 credited to the personal bank accounts of its members as a Yuletide bonus, saying the transfer lacked approval and violated due process. The lawmakers described the payment, reportedly made on the directive of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, as unsolicited, unlawful and unconstitutional.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, and signed by Hon. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, the legislature said each lawmaker received a credit alert of ₦100,000. The funds were immediately returned to the account of the Rivers State Government after members discovered the transfer.
The lawmakers insisted that all public expenditures must follow constitutional due process, including prior approval by the Assembly before disbursement. They accused Governor Fubara of repeatedly withdrawing from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account without legislative sanction since taking office in 2023, actions they said defy the Constitution and a Supreme Court ruling.
The Assembly’s rejection of the bonus comes amid a lingering political standoff in Rivers State, where relations between the governor and lawmakers loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, remain strained. The House has adjourned plenary until January 26, 2026 and has yet to receive the 2026 budget proposal or commissioner nominees from the governor.
Wike’s Message to Rivers Residents
Meanwhile, Nyesom Wike used a visit to Khana Local Government Area to caution Rivers voters about the 2027 elections, warning that their political “ticket” would not be automatic and must be actively earned. Although he did not mention names, his remarks were widely interpreted as a rebuke of the current leadership and a broader warning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Wike also emphasised that political support in Rivers State transcends party lines under the Renewed Hope Agenda, urging residents to follow leaders based on their contributions rather than party affiliation. He cited federal support for local infrastructure and educational projects as examples of benefits flowing to the state.
Supporters aligned with Wike, including the APC’s National Vice Chairman for the South South and former Senator Magnus Abe, reiterated backing for the minister’s stance and criticised Governor Fubara’s influence in key local government areas.
